Braces Orthodontic Treatment

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating misalignments of the teeth and jaws. It can be applied at any age, but in adults, severe jaw misalignments may require orthognathic surgery.

First Orthodontic Examination

Children should have their first orthodontic check-up at around 6-7 years old. Early diagnosis can simplify treatment and help prevent certain anomalies from developing.

Treatment Process

  • For adults, orthodontic treatment is possible as long as the teeth are healthy.
  • In cases involving jawbone irregularities, surgical intervention may be required after braces treatment.
  • Orthodontic treatment continues even after surgery to ensure proper alignment.

Nutrition During Treatment

  • Avoid hard or sticky foods to prevent damage to braces.
  • Take small bites and chew with your back teeth.
  • Brush your teeth thoroughly after every meal to prevent plaque buildup.

Staining & Relapse

  • Braces do not cause cavities, but they can trap food particles, increasing the risk of decay if oral hygiene is neglected.
  • Retainers or clear aligners must be used after active treatment to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions.

Pain & Alternative Treatments

  • Mild discomfort for 1-2 weeks after getting braces is normal.
  • Clear aligners can be an alternative to braces in certain cases. They should be worn for at least 20 hours per day for effective results.

Orthodontic treatment offers both aesthetic and functional benefits. For the best outcome, working with a skilled orthodontist throughout the process is essential.
