Before coming to a dental clinic appointment, there are important steps a patient should take. These ensure that the treatment proceeds correctly and efficiently, and also provide comfort for the patient.
Here are the essential steps to take before your appointment:
1. PREPARE YOUR MEDICAL AND DENTAL HISTORY
Your dentist needs information about your general health to create an accurate treatment plan.
- List of Systemic Diseases: Note all diagnosed chronic conditions such as heart disease (including pacemakers), hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, etc.
- List of Medications: Prepare a list of all prescription and over-the-counter medications, especially blood thinners and antibiotics, as well as vitamins and supplements you regularly take.
- Allergies: Make sure to report any known allergies to medications, latex, or other substances.
- Special Conditions: Inform the clinic in advance about special conditions such as pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Previous Records: If available, bring recent x-rays or treatment reports from your previous dentist.
2. MAINTAIN ORAL HYGIENE
- Brushing and Flossing: Brush your teeth thoroughly and use dental floss immediately before your appointment. A clean oral environment helps the dentist examine your mouth accurately and ensures your comfort.
- Use of Painkillers (Important Note): If you have severe pain and plan to take painkillers, do not take them without consulting your dentist. Some painkillers, especially anti-inflammatory drugs, may complicate diagnosis.
3. APPOINTMENT-SPECIFIC PREPARATIONS
- Note Your Complaints: Prepare brief notes about your symptoms (when the pain started, its location, triggers) and your expectations to share with your dentist.
- Required Documents: Bring your ID (national ID card), health insurance card if available, and your appointment confirmation via SMS or email.
- Be On Time: Arrive at the clinic at least 10–15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete registration and preparation.
- Payment Plan: If a major treatment is planned, obtain information from your clinic in advance about payment options and insurance coverage.
4. SPECIAL PREPARATIONS BEFORE SURGICAL PROCEDURES
If your appointment involves general anesthesia or a surgical procedure (implant, tooth extraction, etc.):
- Fasting: For procedures requiring general anesthesia or sedation, follow your dentist’s instructions regarding fasting (usually 4–6 hours) and avoid food and drink.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable and simple clothing.
- Jewelry/Makeup: Remove nail polish, jewelry, watches, and heavy makeup/lipstick.
- Companion: Since you may not be able to drive after a surgical procedure or sedation, have a companion accompany you.
